For many swimmers, taking off their glasses before getting into the pool means the world instantly becomes blurry. Reading the pace clock, seeing the lane rope clearly, spotting the coach on pool deck, or simply navigating around the pool can become difficult without vision correction.

Fortunately, prescription swim goggles offer an affordable and effective solution.

At Swimwear Shack, we stock a range of prescription and corrective lens swim goggles designed to help swimmers see clearly in the water. To make choosing the correct lens strength easier, we've also created a Prescription Goggle Diopter Calculator.

In this guide, we'll explain how prescription swim goggles work and how to use our calculator to find the right lens strength.

What Are Prescription Swim Goggles?

Prescription swim goggles use corrective lenses to compensate for short-sightedness (myopia) and, in some cases, long-sightedness (hyperopia).

Unlike custom-made prescription eyewear, most prescription swim goggles use pre-manufactured lenses available in fixed diopter strengths such as:

  • -1.50

  • -2.00

  • -2.50

  • -3.00

  • -3.50

  • -4.00

  • -4.50

  • -5.00

Many models allow swimmers to choose different strengths for the left and right eye, making them suitable for swimmers with different prescriptions in each eye.

Why Can't I Just Use My Glasses Prescription?

Your glasses prescription typically contains several measurements:

  • Sphere (SPH)

  • Cylinder (CYL)

  • Axis

  • Add (for multifocal prescriptions)

Most ready-made prescription swim goggles only correct the Sphere component of your vision and do not fully correct astigmatism.

Because of this, swimmers need to convert their prescription into a diopter strength suitable for swim goggles.

How To Calculate Your Prescription Goggle Strength

The most common formula used for prescription swim goggles is:

Sphere + (Cylinder ÷ 2)

This provides an estimated diopter strength for each eye.

Example

Right Eye:

  • Sphere: -3.00

  • Cylinder: -1.00

Calculation:

-3.00 + (-1.00 ÷ 2)

= -3.50

Recommended lens strength: -3.50

Another Example

Left Eye:

  • Sphere: -4.25

  • Cylinder: -0.50

Calculation:

-4.25 + (-0.50 ÷ 2)

= -4.50

Recommended lens strength: -4.50

Using the Swimwear Shack Prescription Goggle Calculator

We've created a simple calculator that does the hard work for you. It is here.

Step 1: Find Your Prescription

Locate your current glasses prescription and identify:

  • Sphere (SPH)

  • Cylinder (CYL)

You'll need these values for both eyes.

Step 2: Enter Your Values

Enter the Sphere and Cylinder values for:

  • Right Eye

  • Left Eye

If your prescription does not include a Cylinder value, simply enter 0.

Step 3: View Your Results

The calculator will:

  • Calculate your estimated diopter strength

  • Suggest an appropriate prescription goggle lens strength

  • Highlight situations where you may need professional advice

Step 4: Choose Your Goggles

Once you know your lens strength, browse our range of corrective lens swim goggles and select the closest matching lens power.

What If I Have Astigmatism?

Many swimmers have some level of astigmatism.

Ready-made prescription swim goggles do not typically correct the Axis component of your prescription and only partially account for Cylinder values.

If your Cylinder value is greater than approximately 1.50, you may notice that ready-made prescription goggles are not as sharp as your everyday glasses.

However, many swimmers with mild to moderate astigmatism still find prescription goggles significantly improve their vision in the water.

Should I Choose a Stronger or Weaker Lens?

When selecting between two available strengths, many swimmers prefer a slightly lower correction rather than a stronger one.

For example:

Calculated strength: -3.75

Available options:

  • -3.50

  • -4.00

Most swimmers would choose -3.50.

This often provides comfortable vision without over-correcting.

Benefits of Prescription Swim Goggles

Prescription swim goggles can help swimmers:

  • Read pace clocks clearly

  • See lane ropes and walls more easily

  • Improve confidence during training

  • Navigate pools safely

  • Enjoy open water swimming with better visibility

  • Avoid wearing contact lenses in the water

For competitive swimmers, clearer vision can make training sessions more enjoyable and efficient.
