After announcing that this will be the first time in history that women from Saudi Arabia will be competing at the London Olympics another issue has now risen regarding the tradition dress of the headscarf.

Saudi leaders only agreed to the women competing for the first time on the condition that the ladies wore appropriate clothing which ultimately includes the headscarf. The international Judo federation stated that according to the principles and spirit of judo, the two Muslim will not be allowed to wear a headscarf during the competition.

Federation’s spokesman Nicolas Messner says the decision was made because of safety concerns because of strangleholds and choke holds used in the sport.

After all the hard work that these two Muslim women have put in to achieve acceptance in the Olympics, I hope that the Saudi Leaders and Judo Federation can come to an agreement that hopefully doesn’t jeopardise the sportswomen’s futures.
