Why You Need Rashies

If you spend a lot of time in the water during the summer you could benefit from a rashie.  You may not want to wear a wetsuit during the hotter months.  However a swimsuit may not provide you with the warmth or protection you need.  A rashie can be worn over a bikini, tankini or one-piece swimsuit and provides additional protection to the torso.  This means you will be warmer in the water and your skin provided with more protection from the sun.

Water Sports

When you are taking part in water sports such as surfing, windsurfing and body boarding you can experience chafing on your chest and stomach.  This can occur as you get on and off the boards.  Over time this can become quite painful so if you are a water sports enthusiast you should invest in a rashie.  This will protect your chest and stomach much better than a thin swimsuit and will help to prevent chafing.

Rashies can also be used to provide additional padding to your chest area if you are spearfishing.  As you reload the spearfishing gun against your chest you can cause chafing and bruises.  A rashie can help to protect your chest and provide you with more grip for the butt of your speargun when reloading.

Thermal Protection

Rashies are also useful if you spend a long time in the water.  No matter how warm the water temperature is the longer you stay in the colder you will get.  This means if you are just wearing a thin swimsuit you could end up cutting your session in the water short.

If you don’t want to have to put a wetsuit on then you can just slip a rashie on over your swimsuit.  This will provide an additional layer of thermal protection to keep you warm in the water.

Rashies can also be worn under wetsuits to increase their thermal protection.  This is ideal if you want to swim in colder waters and you only have a lightweight summer wetsuit.

UV Protection

When you spend a lot of time in the water you need to think very carefully about UV protection. Sun cream and sun block will only work for so long in the water and this can leave your skin vulnerable to burning.  Long sleeve rashies can be a good way of protecting your torso, shoulders and arms from UVA and UVB radiation.
